A very speedy offering today! I can't even share a desk photo because I haven't been in the JanCave at all. The only crafting has been whilst watching the telly in the evening.
88 crochet squares now finished and sent away to the lady who sews 'em up (bless her cotton socks) I'm bored with pink now....
And a couple more flowers from this fun variegated yarn for the village flower bombing:
They look so different but are from the same ball, that pleases me!
G is still working his way through the glass plate negatives and has found some absolutely brilliant ones but which highlight the very different ends of the social scale:
The monied classes. Thanks to a friend of Rhys' who works at the Brooklands Motor museum, we found out that the car is a Rexette. built in Birmingham 1900-10, it's like a backwards three wheeler, so interesting.

What an astonishing photo, it would win competitions even now. It took a lot of hard work by ladies like her to keep the family in comfort - how the other half lived eh?

The photos are interesting. I remember my mum telling me when she was first married she had a mangle in the yard and washed the laundry in a big copper pot thing.

Look how the photographer has caught the light in the photo of the wash tub lady. Fabulous photo I agree. As for the landed gentry one - love the bonnets, not! Am sure I had one bought at a fair for the Festival of Britain (think it was) with a big brim like those. Only sugared netting if I remember rightly. Daddy's girl no doubt wanted one so got it!
Well done you on all those squares, thank goodness for the sewing up lady eh? Love the flowers, isn't it strange how they turned out looking like the colour changes were intentional.

That’s an impressive load of squares Jan! Your variegated flowers are lovely. The photo of the laundry woman is haunting. She looks like she’d have a story to tell, but it would be hardscrabble in the extreme.
I must show the car one to Brian. His grandfather was a chauffeur for a while.

Fab photos - the lady at work is so beautifully lit. It was a hard life then Monday wash day, Tuesday ironing etc (and that was me in the 70s lol) luckily we didn't have to use a wash board and mangle. I tried the little crochet flowers - just need a bit more practice - my tension is always so sloppy! I love that random yarn - perfect for the job - so neat Jan. xx Jo

What a lot of squares you’ve crocheted....the sewing up bit is the bit I like least too so how lovely to have someone who chooses to do it. I love your crocheted flowers esp how the wool makes them all different. Have a great week.

So different than knitting with variegated wool every time I have used in knitting it seems to come out as stripes. That poor lady who has to sew the squares. Love the photos remember when I first got married and wash day was the whole morning, now into the automatic washer and its all done in an hour. Ani
