WOYWW 132

CHRISTMAS IS COMING,
THE GOOSE IS GETTING FAT,
PLEASE PUT A PENNY IN THE OLD MAN'S HAT.
IF YOU HAVEN'T GOT A PENNY,
A HA'PENNY WILL DO,
IF YOU HAVEN'T GOT A HA'PENNY
THEN GOD BLESS YOU!
(Traditional English Rhyme)

It's been a week of stops and starts, alternating frantically busy with snatched moments of peace.  After the craft fair madness of two weeks ago, I've been catching up on some commissions...
Julia was after some of the Nordic fabric in some bunting - so I've made some for her to stick up chez Dunnit.
My brother asked me to make a couple of items for his in-laws, preferably something useful. What DO you give to 80 year olds? So he thought they may like a table centre and a peg bag. Duly done :)

Last Friday was DH's birthday - it was one of those glorious winter days: blue skies, sunshine, crispy cold. So I decided to take him out for the day. We headed towards Winchester as he hadn't been there for a while. OK, there was an ulterior motive *grin* as I knew the Christmas Market was on as well!! He took some fab shots...
The smell as we walked past this stall was fantastic!
I enjoyed having a browse and he enjoyed taking the shots!
The market was set up behind Winchester cathedral around the green, on top of which was an outdoor skating rink.
You can see it was a fantastic day. I love Winchester Cathedral - together with Durham, it's my favourite in England. You can feel the ancient history there. What events that building has witnessed over its long life.
If there were adult sizes of the penguin-sledge that child is using, I might have had a go at skating. But my stupid ear-dizziness problem means that my balance isn't so fantastic anymore :(  It was fun watching all these folk whizz around though!

I bought three of the turquoise baubles, small, medium and large to hang up in  my bedroom window. They're mouth blown glass from Bath - I could have bought the whole stall!! The other pic is for Julia, whose taste for kitsch is enormous!
If I had space in my living/dining room, I would have a dresser filled with blue and white china. But the only available wall is filled by my beloved piano, so it's not going to happen! I can always dream....... :)
Finally, for the history buffs amongst you..
My favourite house tucked in by the city wall. I'd have loved to have had those top rooms as a bedroom when I was a teenager who 'wanted to be alone'!!
And a section of the city walls, featuring some nice chunks of terracotta Roman roof tiles!  Recycling's been around for a long time....
That's it for now. Don't get too hassled by Christmas. Have some choccy instead :) xxxx

I would have loved to visit that Market with you. The sights, the scents, the lovely festive atmosphere, all accompanied by a skilled photographer.

I am sorry I have not been around to visit. My internet went down last week and I just got it back yesterday morning. I read your message about sending my mailing address, but my e-mail is down and I will have to figure out a way to send it to you, OR you can get it from Voodoo Vixen. Unfortunately, I can't find her e-mail address on her blog, so that might not be an option. I may have to visit my neighbor sometime later in the week and use her e-mail address. Sorry I'm such a pain in the bunting!

Happy WOYWW from # 5.

It's good when it works well for everyone ;) my poor dh's birthday plans kept changing. Our child free night went from meal and cinema to take out and bed by 9:30 the next day was spent lying poorlier on the sofa and our day out down graded to getting takeaway. He spent his actual birthday at the first half of an interview..... He and his cold are currenly in Manchester leaving toddler and I I'll and home alone, typical. I'll take your day please!

Hello!

I've had an idea for you hun - tree skirts! I have two - one that is somewhat naff, but is my only red one (with dodgy "Merry Xmas" on it, and made from felt) and another which is, quite literally, tanzanite blue and made from the taffeta that my bridesmaids dresses were. As I was kneeling on the floor, bemoaning the lack of a decent tree skirt to compliment my red/gold tree this year, and it occurring to me that I'm accomplished enough to make my own now - I realised that it was a good idea to prompt you with. After all, you're making bunting and the like, how about tree skirts to match? I'm sure they'll sell!

Change of tack - Winchester, just love it. Went to Uni there and was part of the Uni choir so I got to sing the Coronation Anthem in the Cathedral for the graduation ceremony when I was there. One of my top memories that, an amazing experience. I keep prodding Mr B to go for the market, but he's not taken the bait yet!

Hugs n' stuff - see you Sunday hopefully!

These are lovely photos Jan. We couldn't get any decent shots because of the amount of people and we couldn't get near the stalls. I will definitely go in the week next year! Louis squeezed in and bought me a lovely smelling heart as a surprise from that gorgeous garland stall. He is sitting with me now and he recognised the little chalets! I hope you get more moments of peace this week xx

It's not kitsch it's tasteful!! You're right about Gordon's photos, they show the market and stalls off beautifully. There's a technological breakthrough that means you could have stuff above your piano...a shelf. Tee here. I could be your interior designer...we must have some blue and white WIRES to donate!!!!

WOW..so glad your DH had a birthday and you treated him so well. I love ALL the photos. Simply beautiful buildings in the background and the wonderful items for sale. WOW..wish I could visit. Something awsome about other areas of the world. Enchanting, overwhelming beauty in everything.
We have NO snow yet..pouring down rain and lack of sunshine, but had lots to do inside so was good to have rain and not the snow and ice.
Love the colors of your bunting too, Enjoy WOYWW and have fun preparing for the Holidays

Skating on ice in Winchester... and a market? You were spoiled indeed! I love Winchester, it's such an old city... my other fav is Canterbury... similar sorts of buildings and history. You look like you are busy with all your fabby materials... wish there was a nice (read reasonably priced) material shop here in Calgary... the only one I found you had to pay a membership to buy the stuff!! :0

I'm Steve, the brother for whom the table runner and peg bag were made, and reet pretty they are as well :-)

I went to a similar Xmas Fair, only at Bath instead, well over 100 stalls, near to the Abbey rather than a cathedral.

Jan has just left my house to drive home after delivery of said items (for the M in L) and for pudding I had made a sough dough friendship cake - called Herman. Jan has taken son of Herman home, so in 10 days time it'll well be worth visiting her for slice of her Herman :-)

Have a good Xmas

These are the kind of posts I love - getting away from the messy desks once in awhile! I'm truly stuck on those dried fruit wreaths though. Since I can't get to Winchester I've gotta figure out how to make them meeself.

Love, love, love your post! I haven't been to Winchester in years (naturally!), but used to visit often as my SIL was at college there, beautiful place. Chichester is high on my list too, along with Wells in Somerset, and I'm sure you know Durham is right up at the top though! Beautiful pottery, get some shelves up like Julia suggests! Thanks you again for my beautiful bunting, you do fabulous work!

You look so busy on your desk and those markets look really great. We used to go to markets and old cathedrals when I was little and we lived in England. I used to love the castles.
Have a great week and a very merry Christmas, I won't have time to post next week. We have everyone over to our house for Christmas and have to get ready and play with Audrey.

I remember that hidden house in Winchester. My firm did a mystery fun night out there one yr and we were all dumped in pairs by the Cathedral given a sheet of clues and 2hrs and had to go off and find the clues and take a photo of ourselves in front of each building. When we got to the last but one clue if we solved it we would end up at the chosen resturant! Two people had to be rung up on their mobiles after we had waited an extra 1/2hr and told where to meet us. The hidden house was one of the clues we had to find!! Hugs Mrs A.

Hi Jan
Sorry i'm so late getting to you this week. Your market looks gorgeous and what a setting. We went to the Xmas Market in Leeds today and it was OK but nothing like yours. I did indulge in my fav roasted nuts and DH bought me a beautiful German handpainted plate so I'm a happy bunny!!
Those baubles look beautiful, bet they catch the light in your window.
Winchester looks beautiful. I have been but years ago, it's definitely time for a revisit I think.
Hope you are enjoying the weekend and not working too hard.
