Crafting, fun and friendship

Wednesday, 27 February 2013

One of our tuba players in my band has recently become a dad! So I've been
making bunting....yay!
Pretty, girly colours and hot, pink, spotty letters make a luscious combination! I bonda-webbed the letters on and then went round the edge with a small zigzag stitch....

What else? Oh yes....Pinterest. Oh my giddy aunt, there's a source of lost many beautiful items, too much time spent looking. But you do find some peachy tutorials and this one
is no exception! Ooh, I thought, I'll have a go at making this, it's a variation on a tote-bag theme...

It takes very little fabric, a small piece of batting and Bob's your uncle!

I even discovered a new way of doing a handle with two fabrics that didn't involve 'turning the tube'. It is so easy and saves a lot of swearing! WHY didn't I know about it before? All is explained in the tutorial. Sigh! Anyway, it was quick and easy to make - here's the result:

Cute, huh? Made with my bargain £3 a metre fabric and some toning lining from my stash. Next time, I'll make the box construction of the bottom a bit wider so the bag/bucket/bin has a squarer base. Live and learn, LLJ.....

And the reason for making it? A little present to give to Fiona (Staring at the Sea/Angelfish) whom Julia and I met up with in Salisbury recently.
It's very blurred but I had just grabbed a random person to take the pic on my phone! We are in Franklin's, a fabric shop in Salisbury. We all bought a little something, had a lovely lunch and nattered away about Life, The Universe and Everything! That's what is so fab about meeting up in Real Life, you feel as if you've known the person forever. A fun morning indeed :)

Have a great week! xx

  1. I love that little bag and I am sure it will be treasured. It looks as though the three of you had a great time together. Have a great week. xx Maggie (no number yet)

  2. Super bag Jan - and I can vouch for the fun time you'll have had together. Never dull moment with you two girlies :)

    Hugs, Di xx

  3. Love the bag Jan and will pop over later to check out how it's made. Such a fab pic of happy blogging friends. :-)

  4. Love the bag, Jan, but there you go talking in a foreign language again...batting????
I have discovered that sewing machines and me will never be best friends. I stayed very calm while it misbehaved (not usual i assure you) but had my teeth gritted and felt like I'd run the London marathon by the time I was done and yes i know all about turning handles inside many hours!!!!!! It is now firmly back in the cupboard and I can play with paints and ink again, much more relaxing!!!!!
Love the piccy of you all, sounds like a lovely day.

  5. great looking bag Jan. I am sure Daisie will love the bunting too! I have found on Pinterest if you really like something you should copy it to your hard drive beside pinning it cause the next time you come back it may be gone! Hope you have a great week and thanks for sharing with us! Vickie #39

  6. Great bag, lovely pic of the three of you... no not calling you bags, the bag you made is lovely... ok I give up, stop digging.... have a great week.Helen, 8

  7. It was was really a nice diverting morning and lunch and I'm sure when Fiona's therapy is over, she'll probably feel similarly!!
Loving the Daisie bunting. Batting we're calling it frightfully over the pond!

  8. Loving your bags missus! I'm off to Salisbury on Monday on our way back from the retreat so we might have to pop in Franklins. Pinterest - oh yes, my life is over.... ;-) Have a great week x

  9. hi Jan, loving that fruity hearts fabric! Not tried pinterest yet, not sure I can cope with another addiction loL!

  10. Ohhhh yes I know the lost hours in Pinterest. At least you made something, I just drool over beautiful things (laugh at ridiculous recipes) and realise I wasted two hours. Lovely to see woyww's catch up and post a pic ... so we can all have a geek. Love the old saying.
    Sandra @12

  11. Sorry I haven't been around lately - running out of time all the time! Still your bag - bucket what ever is wonderful! Also love the photo of you and Julia! I am looking forward to the crop so we can have another chat! Maybe sometime end of this year I will be able to have more chats! Psst...more on this at the crop!
    Lots of hugs,

  12. Daisies bunting is very pretty. I'm hoping to have a go at some bunting soon...
    Have a good week

  13. I refuse to look at Pinterest, I really don't need something else to gobble up all my time! Love the bag, the simple things are usually what take the most planning to make it look sinple! Another meet up! Hopefully we can add to that when I'm back.

  14. Fab basket Jan - I love the tutorial - so simple and I will be giving it a go. Hope your ears are a bit better - thankfully my cold has dried up a bit and I feel more like me today! x Jo

  15. Wow cool little bag! Great of friends enjoying a visit! Happy WOYWW! Nan #1

  16. Jan, I love seeing your sweet faces--you guys are so cute!! I really want to Skype in to the crop in least for a bit! So, I am sending you (in spirit) a big get well hug for your ear, and if I could bring you some of my famous homemade potato leek soup, I would! I would deliver it fresh in a nice Ball jar. It's so cool, because your song at the top, is an old song I used to sing all the time when I was in fourth grade. I would sing it at the top of my lungs! Also, we must follow each other on Pinterest--how do we do that? You are so clever to help eliminate all the cussing we all do over tube turning! I adore making bags...but making the handles is the bane of my existence--so that's why I turned to lanyards! Too funny...I'm so lazy sometimes. And yes, I agree that variegated yarn gives us that Fair Isle feeling--but oh if I could knit the things that come from there!! Sorry this is so long--if only I too lived an hour away from Highclere, we'd have coffee! Take care dearest. Happy WOYWW! Sandy Leigh #52

  17. Great bag/bin/? Jan. What a fun day you had with your friends....I'm a little green

  18. It is a fab little basket and I love it. It was so great to meet you both and I really enjoyed my day out. Can't wait for the crop. Hope you're feeling all better soon.
    Fiona xx

  19. Hi Jan, love the bunting - it's going to look very pretty in the new baby's room. I haven't caught the addiction to Pinterest yet ... just a few items pinned on my board ... but I can see the attraction, especially if you find great tutorial like this. Anything is better than having to pull the tube through to make a handle ... such a pain!

Great to see a pic of you and Julia with Fiona having a great get-together in a fabric shop - where else :)

DH is fine, much recovered from his last bout of poorliness. Bonnie is in great form since her recent health scare - the inject the vet gave her seems to have perked her up no end :) Apart from asthma troubling me, I'm fine ... just can't go out in the cold for long. However, just seeing the sun cheers us up no end :)

Hope you and yours are all well and enjoying some spring weather too. Have a great WOYWW. Elizabeth x #104

  20. How cute is that bunting and I love your new bag/bin. I'm going to look for simple super easy patterns once I get better acquired with my sewing bug, oh and once I can sew in a straight line. No desk from me, because it's empty or I can't share yet what I'm working on! Take care Zo xx

  21. Dear LLJ,

For some reason I can't see everyone on Julia's post! Your bunting is ADORABLE. Lucky little baby. And oh, that new style of bag is to die for! How lovely to meet up in person....... someday I'll jump across the pond (fingers crossed).

Thank you for visiting me already!

    Happy WOYWW

  23. Love the bag and will definitely have a look - I need to make quite a large bag that will stand up! Only thing is.... once I get on to Pinterest I could be awol for a while!! Trying to persuade hubby that we need to visit Wiltshire again(we rented a cottage there with the family last year)-maybe at the end of May?? Chris#83

  24. I am now singing the song! Gorgeous bunting and cute bag. Thanks for visiting earlier and sharing. Happy WOYWW. Caro x

  25. Hi LLJ
fab fabric on the bag and the tutorial was very good especially the handles.
It could be made in any size, I think I have made similar before.
I had a trip to Salisbury at the weekend and had to visit the new improved Franklins, nice airy shop with a good selection of patchwork fabrics.
Not so sure about the staff though, not terribly helpfull, maybe it was just a busy Saturday.

  26. Pinterest is so much fun & the hours just whizz by before you know it. Happy woyww Jill #22

  27. Great bag Jan - will check out the tutorial later. About the peg bag - I just made up the design myself - half a metre of fabric and cut it a bit wider than the width of the wooden coat hanger. I drew around the edge of a salad plate (denby sized) to make the curve and then edged both ends with ready made bias binding, overlapped a bit and stitched up the sides. After turning right way out and inserting hanger, I stitched the buttons on each side to hold it together better. The panel was made using felt which had been die cut with my Vintaj machine and hand stitched (hope this makes sense - if not just email me Maybe you would have an idea how much I could charge for something like this on a craft stall? - think I'll have to get rid of all this stuff somehow!

  45. Just doing my Monday morning catch up.
I thought the trend for bunting was going to one of those things that made a comeback and then went as fast as it came but it’s not the case is it… seems to be firmly here to stay. I love the length you’ve making, such pretty colours and it’s going to look beautiful in Daisy’s nursery.

Loving the cute little bag too but surely something that small must be so fiddly to made. You must have the patience of a saint, that’s all I can say.

Thanks for stopping by this week
    Happy Crafting!
